How an Irrigation Controller Receives Power

An irrigation controller is the timing brain of the system, but it is an electrical device first. 120 or 240 VAC from the home mains enters an outdoor outlet (typically GFCI-protected), feeds a transformer that steps the voltage down to roughly 24 VAC, and that 24 VAC feeds the controller's terminal strip. From the terminal strip, a common return and individual zone outputs run out to the field wiring and to each valve solenoid. A small backup battery — usually a 9 V alkaline cell or a model-specific lithium pack — preserves the controller's program and clock during brief AC outages. A failure at any stage of that chain: lost mains, tripped GFCI, failed transformer, depleted battery, or surge damage to the logic board, leaves the controller unresponsive.

Common Symptoms

Controller display is completely blank, even with the face panel door closed
Display reads 'no AC,' 'low battery,' or shows a battery icon only
Zone outputs never fire; the controller appears to advance through the program but no zone activates
Zones that worked normally have stopped firing since a recent storm or local outage
Display flickers, then goes blank, when other loads elsewhere in the home cycle

Diagnostic Steps

Dead outdoor outlet / lost mains power. Plug a known-good lamp or set a multimeter to VAC and confirm the outdoor receptacle feeding the controller transformer is live. A reading of 0 VAC or a dead test lamp means the controller problem is upstream of the unit. Confirm the home's circuit breaker is fully ON — a partially tripped breaker can still feed chattering loads but drop the controller.
Tripped GFCI. Outdoor irrigation outlets are almost always GFCI-protected, either at the receptacle itself or at an upstream GFCI circuit breaker. Press TEST, then RESET on the GFCI receptacle and on any upstream GFCI breaker. If the GFCI will not reset, an actual ground fault exists downstream — commonly a cut field wire, a chewed cable, water inside the controller enclosure, or a failed solenoid.
Blown transformer (internal or plug-in wall wart). With the controller powered, measure VAC across the transformer secondary terminals inside the controller or at the terminal strip. Expect 24–28 VAC at the secondary. A reading of 0 VAC or below 18 VAC indicates a failed transformer. If the transformer is the plug-in wall-wart style, swap with a same-spec replacement; the VA rating matters — an under-rated replacement runs hot and fails again within months.
Failed backup battery / surge damage. Many controllers lose their stored programs and clock on a battery failure followed by even a brief power blip, then look 'dead' until reprogrammed. Inspect the date code on the 9 V alkaline (or model-specific) backup battery; replace if older than 2 years. After a lightning storm or a local outage, surge damage can take out the controller's onboard fuse, internal MOV, or the entire logic board — even with a good transformer and battery in place.
Bad wiring at the controller box. Open the controller enclosure and inspect the terminal strip: a loose common wire, a corroded zone wire, water pooling inside the box, chewed insulation from rodents, or a wire that slipped out of the clamp. A loose common wire alone will silence every zone without affecting the display, while a partially shorted zone wire can prevent the controller from advancing past that zone in its program.
