How a Pop-Up Sprinkler Head Works

A pop-up sprinkler head extends a riser column on a spring-loaded mechanism when water pressure lifts it from the body. The sealed riser protects the internals from dirt and debris while retracted. When pressure is lost, a stainless steel spring returns the riser to the stored position.

Common Symptoms

Riser stays fully retracted while the zone runs
Riser extends partially then sinks back down mid-cycle
Head body fills with water but no spray emerges
One head in an otherwise normal zone fails to pop up

Diagnostic Steps

Run the zone and observe. Watch the affected head directly while the zone is active. Note whether water is present in the body (indicates flow is reaching the head). If the body is dry, the supply pipe or nozzle is blocked upstream.
Check for debris in the nozzle. Remove the nozzle from the affected head. A clogged nozzle orifice will prevent water from reaching the riser mechanism, making it appear the head is broken when it simply isn't receiving flow. Mineral scale, sand, and tiny root fragments are common culprits.
Inspect the riser seal. Pull the riser up by hand (it should extend 2–4 inches on a standard 4-inch head). Look for a small O-ring or gasket at the base of the riser. A damaged or missing seal allows water to flow up past the riser during the cycle, reducing the pressure differential needed to hold the riser up.
Test spring tension. With the zone off and the riser manually extended, press down firmly on the riser cap. A healthy spring provides noticeable resistance and returns the riser quickly when released. A weak or broken spring allows the riser to sink back under its own weight even when the water is on.
Look for a cracked or bent riser. Inspect the riser column for visible cracks, dents, or bending. A riser that won't slide smoothly in the guide bushing is mechanically bound and cannot complete its travel cycle.
Check for freeze damage. If the system was winterized with compressed air and the head was not removed, ice can crack the riser, damage the seal, or deform the spring. Freeze damage is often visible as a distorted riser shape or a stuck/binding extension.
Confirm the zone valve is fully opening. A partially opened valve reduces flow to the entire zone, which can prevent the lowest-pressure head from popping up. If the valve flow-control stem is even slightly closed, the zone may have enough pressure to feed other heads but not the worst-performing one.
