When the Fall Blow-Out Fails to Clear a Zone

If the compressor ran for 10 minutes and water is still spitting out of every rotor, the problem is upstream of the heads, not in the heads. Three patterns tell you where the air is getting lost. (1) Water keeps coming from every head in the zone — the compressor CFM is too low for the pipe volume and you cannot push the slug of water past the manifold. (2) Most heads clear but two at the far end keep dribbling — there is an inline check valve or a single low spot holding water; the air pressure cannot overcome the head of trapped water in the dead leg. (3) The zone clears for 30 seconds, then water returns — the lateral has a crack and the air is escaping from the break; the water you see is groundwater being drawn back into the line by the negative pressure when the compressor shuts off.

Freeze-Damage Walk-Through

Freeze damage to an irrigation system shows in five distinct patterns, and each one points back to a specific winterization gap. Hairline PVC split at a solvent-cement joint: the cement never fully bonded, the joint held pressure all summer, but the freeze expanded the small annular gap and split the bell. Rotor body crack on a gear-drive head: the head was buried with the cap at grade, water pooled on the retracted wiper seal, the cap froze, the body cracked at the riser throat. Solenoid plunger split: a valve manifold that was not drained properly; water inside the solenoid cavity froze and split the brass. Manifold union split: unions installed above grade without insulation failed first; check every union within 18 inches of the surface for visible cracks and salt-etched trails.

Manual Drain vs. Auto Drain Decision Tree

The choice between drain methods is not aesthetic — it depends on your system's elevation profile and on what the installer did at each low point. Manual drain systems have a small stop-and-waste valve or a quarter-turn ball valve at the lowest point of every zone. Open them at first frost and leave them open through winter. A manual drain valve that has not been operated in a season can seize; if the handle will not turn, do not force it — crack the body and you will flood the valve box. Auto drain systems have a spring-loaded poppet at every low point that opens when line pressure drops below ~10 PSI. They require no manual action, but each poppet must hold a seal at full pressure all summer — a single leaking poppet can drain a zone mid-summer and look like a stuck-closed valve. Use this rule: if your system has a manual drain valve, blow-out is supplemental protection; if it has only auto drains, blow-out is the primary protection and the auto drains are the backup; if it has neither, blow-out is the ONLY protection and any miss means a freeze failure.

Inspecting the Backflow Plug Before Removal

The freeze plug on a PVB (or DCVA in some jurisdictions) is a small brass disc on top of the valve body, intentionally designed to fail before the body cracks in a freeze event. If the plug is ruptured, do not try to reinstall it. If the plug is intact but the valve body is cracked, you also need to replace the valve — the plug only protects the body. If the test cock plug is stuck, soak the threading in penetrating oil for 10 minutes before applying a strap wrench. Test cock caps on RPZ units and the air-vacuum poppet on PVB units are different from freeze plugs — they are serviceable fittings, not sacrificial parts, and removing them is part of normal winterization isolation.

Compressor Capacity vs. Your Pipe

A small shop compressor (under 8 CFM at 50 PSI) cannot sustain the volume of air needed to push a slug of water through a residential lateral — the air pressure collapses below the trip threshold of the safety relief almost immediately, and the compressor never builds back up while water is in the line. Use this rule of thumb: poly lateral pipe requires a minimum 9 CFM at 50 PSI for a 3/4-inch run, 14 CFM for 1-inch; PVC lateral requires 12 CFM at 50 PSI for 3/4-inch, 18 CFM for 1-inch. Below these numbers, blow-out never finishes — you spend an entire day running the compressor and water is still visible at the heads. Above these numbers, the blow-out completes in 2–4 minutes per zone. A 6 CFM pancake compressor on a 1-inch PVC lateral is the typical cause of an "incomplete" winterization.

Five Specific Symptoms That Mean the Blow-Out Was Incomplete

Visible water pooled in the lowest body of a pop-up head when the zone ends — even a pebble-sized droplet is enough to crack the body
Persistent drip from one body when the zone is off more than a week after blow-out — water is still migrating from a low spot
Rotor head that turns hard by hand after winterization — internal gear is waterlogged; usually a frozen-gear symptom that surfaces only in spring
Valve-manifold union above grade with a salt-etched ring around the fitting — water wicked out, froze and cracked the union during winter
Above-grade backflow preventer with a stained underside — either the body froze or the relief valve opened during a cold snap while the system was in shutdown

Why Air Gets Stuck in Lateral Lines

Air is a gas and water is a liquid — the boundary between them in a sloped lateral is unstable. As the air pushes the slug of water down the slope, the slug accelerates, then the air breaks around it and gets trapped at high points. This is why a blow-out on a perfectly drained system can still leave low spots full of water. The diagnostic question to ask is not "did the air reach the heads" but "did the AIR stay in front of the WATER all the way to the heads." Two telltales that you have an air pocket: (1) the heads sputter at the start of the blow-out, then go silent, then spit again — air-water-air-water means an air pocket re-broke around the slug. (2) the heads clear completely on one pass, but a different zone at a different elevation does not, even with the same compressor and time on task — the elevation engineering is the variable.

Identifying the Type of Freeze Damage

When you find the failed part, document location and type before replacing — patterns matter. PVC slips at a fitting: that fitting had a marginal solvent weld, then a marginal winterization. Replace the fitting and re-cement; do not reuse the slip coupling. Rotor body crack: replace the entire head, not just the nozzle. The crack propagates with every freeze cycle. Poly pipe split at a barb fitting: cut back 6 inches, install a new barb with a new stainless clamp, double-clamp downstream. Valve solenoid split: replace the solenoid, but also blow out the manifold — a single split solenoid means the manifold had water in it, and the other solenoids are likely to fail next. Backflow body crack: see the diagnostic library — never attempt to repair a cracked body, only replace.

Decision: Re-Blow vs. Repair vs. Replace

Re-blow if: the system is intact, the compressor was undersized, the lateral pipe is in good shape, and no component shows freeze damage
Repair if: one or two components failed (single head, single solenoid, single union) and the rest of the system winterized cleanly; budget for repairs, not full replacement
Replace the component if: a PVC fitting has a visible crack, a rotor body is fractured, a solenoid plunger is split, or any backflow body shows the failure patterns documented in the backflow diagnostic
Replace the system if: more than 30% of the heads show freeze damage, the manifold has multiple cracked unions, or the backflow preventer failed — the winterization gap is not just a parts problem, you need a full re-spec of the winterization procedure before next year
